"New Japanese Fashion"

I just came across this article on the New York Times website entitled New Japanese Fashion: LED Lights for Your Teeth.  Why is it that if one person in Japan does something strange, the western newspapers and TV shows instantly refer to it as the "New Japanese Fashion"?



It seems to me that one guy in Tokyo is doing something strange, and then talked a group of high school girls to allow him to create a video of them doing the same thing.



What do you think? Would you walk around with this in your mouth?
